An elegant, vivacious black actress and singer, she debuted onscreen in the singing group drama Sparkle (1976), then appeared infrequently in films, often in supporting roles which did not display her musical abilities. She worked in a number of Broadway shows in the '80s; in the revival of Show Boat she was the first black actress to portray the mulatto Julie on Broadway. She did some TV work in the mid '80s.
