Born Ernest Sharpe. After working on Broadway and radio, he broke into films in the mid '30s as a comedic character actor. He often played suave European gigolos or effete clerks. He returned to the stage in the '40s after serving in World War Two. He was a regular on the TV series Wonder Boy.
