Left school at 15 and worked as a telegraphist in the Post Office, learning shorthand and typing in order to pass her Civil Service exams.
Made her professional stage debut in 1962 at the Oldham Coliseum Theatre in The Boyfriend.
Cut an LP for Philips Records called On the Street Where I Live in 1973.
Won Best Actress at both the TV Times and Oracle Teletext awards in 1989.
Was awarded the Lifetime Achievement in 2004 for her services to Coronation Street, and Best Onscreen Partnership at the British Soap Awards in May 2006, for her role as Rita Sullivan.
Was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) at the 2010 Birthday Honours, for her services to drama.
Was arrested in March 2014 on suspicion of drink-driving, pleaded not guilty in court but changed her plea to guilty in January 2015. Was banned from driving for one year and fined £3,000and ordered to pay £1,750 in costs.
Is a private person and rarely gives interviews, although she has given some for Coronation Street documentaries, and has appeared at several television awards shows.
