- Born as first son to a mill worker father and a housemaker mother who lived in a modest community house (chawl) in Byculla, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.
- Completed his high school education from 7th to 10th standard at a boarding school in Deolali – a hill station in Nashik, Maharashtra – and returned to Mumbai for higher schooling.
- Did a Diploma in Business Management after graduating in Chemistry.
- Worked as a bank clerk for 11 years at various branches of Central Bank of India in Maharashtra.
- Made his acting debut on television for the play Dnyan-deep – telecast on Doordarshan, India's national channel.
- Made his silver screen acting debut in Andha Yudh (1987).
- Had rejected the role of Gracy Singh's father in Lagaan (2001) that had been nominated for the Oscars.
- Was married for 24 years until his wife departed after suffering from breast cancer.
- Plays the main lead in the longest running television series C.I.D. that is a part of the Guinness Book of World Records.
