Commanding Irish character actor McAnally appeared in some 30 British and international films, though he was primarily a stage actor with the Abbey Theater. For his work in The Mission and No Surrender (both 1987) he won the Evening Standard Film Award for best actor. He appeared in the PBS-TV series A Perfect Spy and A Very British Coup.
