Horribly disfigured by shellfire during one of the early battles of World War I, Adrien, a once handsome lieutenant, is confined to the officers' quarters of a military hospital. Left to recuperate in a room without mirrors, he spends the next five years in the company of doctors, nurses, and other wounded men, forming friendships that will last a lifetime.
