Born Sheldon Leonard Bershad, he began appearing onscreen in 1939 after much stage work. He played character roles in dozens of films, usually portraying gangsters and hoods, often of a colorful, Runyonesque variety. Later he became one of the most successful producer-directors of TV series, afterwards acting only rarely.
