Cleveland began acting on the stage in 1903 but did not enter movies until the sound era. He played character parts in over 150 Hollywood films of the '30s, '40s, and '50s, usually as a crusty, kindly grandfather-type. Cleveland also, played "Gramps" on the '50s TV series Lassie.
