After establishing himself as a stage actor in England, in 1913 he moved to the U.S. and soon began a busy career as a character actor in films. He became the silent screen's most notorious villain (along with Noah Beery Sr.). He made the transition to the sound era without trouble, and remained very busy onscreen (though no longer typecast as a villain) through the early '40s.
