A soulful-looking child actor, Beckett first appeared onscreen at age three as member of the juvenile "Our Gang" comedy troop; he later got some roles as a teenager, such as that of the young Jolson in The Jolson Story (1946). Once he reached maturity, however, his popularity waned and his career failed to take off; he died an apparent suicide at age 39.
