Born Patricia Gene O'Brien, Ellis (the stepdaughter of a theatrical producer) began acting onstage in her pre-teens. She debuted onscreen at 16 in 1932 and appeared in about 40 movies, usually playing leads in B-pictures. She retired from the screen in 1940 to marry and died of cancer in 1970.
