Andre Morell graduated from amateur theatricals to the professional stage at the age of 25. Two years after his 1936 London debut, he joined the Old Vic, and made his inaugural screen appearance in the quota-quickie Thirteen Men and a Gun. After serving with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in WWII, he played leading roles on-stage and in films, and was seen in several experimental Shakespearean productions on BBC television in the late '40s. Often cast as lawyers, police inspectors, military officers, and other take-charge types, Morell was seen to excellent advantage in such major productions as Bridge on the River Kwai (in 1957 as Colonel Green) and Ben-Hur (in 1959 as Sextus). Sci-fi/fantasy fans will remember him as the title character in the 1958 British TV serial Quatermass and the Pit, and as one of filmdom's most resourceful Dr. Watsons in Hammer Films' Sherlock Holmes opus Hound of the Baskervilles. Active in films right up to his death, he was also briefly the president of British Actors Equity. Andre Morell was married to film star Joan Greenwood, with whom he appeared in Mysterious Island (1961).
