- Is the eldest sister of 4 girls born to a Dominican mother and an English father (although she later found out that the man who raised her was not her ‘real’ father).
- Lost her youngest sister, who was schizophrenic, to suicide in 1988.
- Worked in Australia for 13 years as a TV reporter, presenter and government advisor on mental health.
- Lived in Tanzania, East Africa for a number of years and attended a New Zealand run independent school for expatriates – she commented in her autobiography that it was a very stict school which used harsh capital punishment to keep students in check.
