Attractive, green-eyed leading lady of '40s Hollywood films, with distinctive shoulder-length dark hair and a widow's peak; she looked her best in thrillers. In 1943, actor Charles Boyer and director Howard Hawks founded B-H Productions, a new film company, and hired her as their sole contract star; she debuted onscreen as the only woman in Corvette K-225 (1943). Later she was signed by Universal, going on to play her most noteworthy role in the thriller Phantom Lady (1944). Subsequently the roles she received were sub-standard and she retired from the screen in the '50s after appearing in several cheap Republic productions.
