Craig was born Michael Gregson. He made his stage debut in British repertory in 1949 and began playing extra parts in films in 1950, but not until 1954 did he land his first speaking role. Gradually his roles increased in importance. He has also acted with the Royal Shakespeare Company in London and New York.
