- Began acting in the theatres of Lyallpur and Peshawar, eventually moving to Mumbai where he joined Imperial Films.
- Played the lead role in Cinema Girl (1929).
- After establishing himself in Indian silent film, he played a supporting role in India's first talkie Alam Ara (1931).
- The Indian government awarded him the Padma Bhushan in 1969, India's third highest civilian award.
- Was one of the founding members of the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA).
- After his death he was posthomously awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contributions to Indian cinema.
