During the 1930s, Ljuba Welitsch was among her native Bulgaria's best sopranos. She emigrated to Vienna in 1940 and became a major opera star throughout Europe and the United States in the '50s. Welitsch translated her fame into a few film appearances beginning with Hippodrome (1961).
