A tall, gaunt British character actor of stage and screen, he studied acting at the Old Vic School, then debuted onstage in 1936. Gough appeared in many plays as both leads and supporting players. He debuted onscreen in Blanche Fury (1946). He has often played sinister or homicidal characters, occasionally in the lead.
