After directing silent films he began acting onscreen in 1926, playing character roles in 90 movies through the early '50s. He portrayed crooks, cops, comics, heavies, Irishmen, etc., and was "Doc Meadowland," cowboy Monte Hale's sidekick in dozens of Westerns.
