Son of British actor Henry Ainley, with whom he appeared in As You Like It (1936), the younger Ainley made his debut in that film. His stage debut came at 18 under the pseudonym "Richard Riddle." Ainley began making American films with Lady With Red Hair (1940), where he played the romantic lead opposite Miriam Hopkins.
