He moved to the U.S. at age six, going on to be a college football player and professional heavyweight wrestler. In the early '40s he entered films; because of his huge size and crude appearance he was typecast as a stupid, tough thug. Very busy in the '40s and '50s, he continued to appear in occasional films until shortly before his death.
