A tough-looking, craggy-faced supporting comic, Dick Sutherland (born Archibald Thomas Johnson) came to films in the very early '20s with a background as a minstrel performer. Best known today for his appearances opposite Harold Lloyd (as the Maharajah in A Sailor-Made Man [1921] and the villainous hobo in Grandma's Boy [1922]), Ben Turpin (in The Shriek of Araby [1923]), and Lloyd Hamilton, Sutherland was equally prominent in melodramas. He used his blackface minstrel roots to play Sambo in the 1927 version of Uncle Tom's Cabin and was the cook in Laurel and Hardy's The Hoose-Gow, one of his very few talkie appearances.
