American actress Martha Sleeper played leads and second leads in many Hal Roach comedy shorts. Later, she continued on to play in many Hollywood films until she retired in 1937. Following her retirement, she began a successful career on Broadway. In 1945, she returned to film for her final screen performance in The Bells of St. Mary's. The next year, she abandoned acting and began designing costumes. Later, she opened a boutique in Charleston, SC.
