After trying to make it as a singer, Caruso broke into films in 1940 and remained busy on screen for about two decades, after which his work was sporadic. Early in his career, Caruso was typecast as a handsome but dangerous mobster, or a dingy, unpleasant, threatening Mexican, Latin, or Arab.
