Bio
- Was born and named Manjula in Darjeeling, Bengal Presidency, British India.
- Had studied in a missionary school in Darjeeling and was fluent in English.
- Moved from Kolkata to Mumbai and was trained by actress Leela Desai at her ground-floor apartment on Worli Sea Face.
- Made her Bengali film debut in Khoka Babur Pratyabartan (1960) and Bollywood debut in Aashirwad (1968).
- Was named Suchorita for her debut flick on a suggestion of director Bibhuti Laha, but later filmmaker Kanak Mukhopadhyaya shortened it to Sumita.
- Married the Bengali revolutionary and film editor Subodh Roy and settled down in Kolkata.
- Acted in the Hindi film Mere Apne (1971) that marked the directorial debut of Gulzar.
- Was continually active in theatre and cultural activities in West Bengal and was also a part of Ranga Sabha.
- Passed away of heart failure in her south Kolkata residence at Lake Gardens on 9 June 2017.
