- A world famous tabla player, his talent was apparent at an early age. He began touring when he was only eleven.
- Was awarded the highest recognition in India for a practicing artist, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar, in 1990.
- Prominently featured on Mickey Hart's collaboration album Planet Drums, which won the inaugural Grammy Award for Best World Music Album in 1992.
- Composed and performed the music for the multiple National Film Award winning Vanaprastham - The Last Dance (1999).
