Born John Oleson. After gaining acting experience in tent shows and stock productions, he reached Broadway in the 1929 play Street Scene; two years later he debuted onscreen in the film version of the play. He stayed in Hollywood and went on to play character roles in over 100 films; later in his career he appeared in a great many TV productions.
