Hails from a village in Rajasthan and hardly spoke English.
Was in the eighth standard in school when her father passed away.
Began earning a livelihood for her family after her father passed away.
Met her would-be husband Om Shivpuri at Jaipur Radio Station where they worked together.
Fell in love with Om Shivpuri while they worked together in plays at National School of Drama (NSD) and they married after nine years of waiting in 1968.
Nicknamed Om Shivpuri, her celebrity husband Binnuji as one of his names was Binod.
Started a theatre group Dishantar along with her husband, which did so well that tickets had to be sold in black for almost every show.
Made her Bollywood debut with the role of a pious widow in Swami (1977).
Put on weight due to a difficult pregnancy with her son Vineet.
Shot to fame after age 60 with her role as Baa in the popular Indian soap opera Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (2000-2008) that completed 1833 episodes.
Passed away due to multiple organ failure at age 78 on 20 May 2015 in Mumbai, India.
