At age 15 Karns began acting professionally onstage. He broke into films in 1920, playing light supporting roles in over 100 films over the next four-plus decades, most actively in the '30s. He tended to play crusty but amiable types, and was very frequently cast as hustling newspaper reporters. He costarred in the '50s TV series Hennessy.
