For six decades one of Germany's most popular musical stars, Ilse Werner (born Still) came to the attention of Ufa while studying under Max Reinhardt in Vienna. But despite her distinguished theatrical background, Werner became popular mainly for her whistling prowess and her recordings of popular songs much beloved in the 1930s and 1940s. She became a top screen attraction as well with Wunschkonzert (Request Concert, 1940), an incredibly popular home-front comedy-drama centered around a beloved radio program. Relocating to America with her second husband in 1948, Werner returned to Germany after her 1953 divorce and continued her busy stage, screen, and television schedule well into the 21st century.
