Her family moved from Delhi to Mumbai when she was 10 years old.
Discovered her love for theatre acting while in school; joined Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) at the age of 16.
Has been a part various productions in Gujarati, Marathi and Hindi theatre.
Shifted to Bengaluru (then known as Bangalore) in 1979.
Worked as assistant director on two celebrated English films, David Lean's A Passage to India (1984) and Timothy Forder's Indian Summer (1987).
Set up the Sanket Trust along with Girish Karnad and M. S. Sathyu in 1992.
In 2004, co-founded the Ranga Shankara theatre in memory of her late husband.
Won the Karnataka State Best Supporting Actress Award for the film Jogi (2005).
Bagged the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2008.
Received a Star Screen Best Supporting Actress Award for her role in the movie Paa (2009).
The Government of India conferred upon her the Padmashree, the fourth highest civilian award in the country, in 2010.
