A member of the celebrated Old Vic while still in her teens, actress Yvonne Mitchell made the transition from stage to screen in 1949. The following year she made an indelible impression as a condemned murderess in Yield to the Night. Her better-known screen credits include The Divided Heart (for which she won the 1954 British Film Academy Award), Woman in a Dressing Gown (1957), and The Great Waltz (1979), in which she played Johann Strauss' wife Anna. She also accumulated a number of impressive credits as a playwright and novelist. Her husband was author/critic Derek Monsey. In 1957, Yvonne Mitchell published her autobiography, accurately and succinctly titled Actress.
