Looking to stop attacks on stagecoaches carrying government gold during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln (Frank McGlynn) appoints soldier Bill Gibson (Smith Ballew) to investigate. Bill arrives in California, the center of the robberies, just after another theft and the murder of the driver. Though the dead driver's brother, Bart (Ben Alexander), doesn't trust him, Bill accepts the kindness of hotel owner Fred Foster (LeRoy Mason) -- unaware that Fred is working with the gang's leader.
