Synopsis

Based on the bestselling novel by Kaye Gibbons, the made-for-cable Charms for the Easy Life takes place in North Carolina during WWII. At the heart of the story is Charlie Kate (Gena Rowlands), an unconventional matriarch and midwife, who years earlier had been given a gift for homeopathic healing from a mysterious black gentleman. Charlie Kate, her widowed daughter Sophia (Mimi Rogers), and her granddaughter Margaret (Susan May Pratt) are a continual source of outrage for their tradition-bound white neighbors, especially because of Charlie's insistence upon dispensing racially equal health care. This, however, does not mean that the feisty old lady is completely free of prejudice herself, as witness her skeptical reaction to daughter Sophia's growing relationship with divorced lawyer Mr. Baines (Geordi Johnson) -- and her simultaneous, wholehearted endorsement of Margaret's romance with wounded GI Tom Hawkings (Kenneth Mitchell).
