This based-on-fact TV movie concerns the efforts by Minnesota couple Nathalie and Steve Johnson (Dana Delany, Hart Bochner) to adopt a baby. Unable to get results through the standard channels, the Johnsons are willing to deal with Hungarian lawyer Gabor Szabo (Bruce Ramsay), who through means of his own is able to offer the couple an orphaned baby girl named Gitta -- but at a hefty price. Nathalie and Steve's joy quickly turns to dismay when Szabo begins arbitrarily increasing his fee, until the amount is far beyond their resources. It turns out that Gitta is being auctioned to various anxious couples by the illegal baby-selling ring fronted by Szabo. Even though the law does not regard this sort of activity as a felony, the Johnsons are determined to bring Szabo to justice, and with this in mind, they agree to collaborate in a sting operation engineered by the FBI. The actual case upon which the filmed is based ultimately led to a major change in New York State law, implemented by Governor George Pataki.
