Synopsis

Pil-je (Im Chang-jung) is a sharp-dressed mobster assigned to clear out First Street, the poorest part of Pine Tree Village, a rundown shantytown on the outskirts of Seoul, for a luxury real estate development. At first, the narcissistic tough guy seems the perfect man for the job, ready to threaten, mislead, and cajole the hapless residents to achieve his boss's goals. Pil-je's disgust with the living conditions leads him to get the neighborhood's electrical and phone service upgraded, which makes him a local hero. Soon enough, a trio of spunky kids, one of whom is determined to learn how to fly, and a beautiful and indomitable female boxer, Myeongnan (Ha Ji-won of Duelist) begin to charm the thug. While Myeongnan deals with her disabled father (a former boxer himself) and prepares for a high-level bout, Pil-je vainly tries to keep his bosses at bay while he negotiates with the locals and wrestles with his own conscience. Meanwhile, Seon-ju, another First Street resident, enrolls in a training course for a shady "network marketing" business, and finds unlikely romance with a vending machine operator. Director Yun Je-gyun's box office success, Miracle on First Street, reunites the stars of his smash hit Sex is Zero. The film had its New York premiere at the 2007 New York Asian Film Festival, presented by Subway Cinema.
