Synopsis

Steve Jacobs makes his directorial debut with this wild and woolly comedy about love and revenge. Set in a bleak Australian industrial town during the 1960s, the film opens with Lola (Lola Marceli) -- a pregnant Spanish woman with a fierce temper -- throwing herself on the ground in a fit of anger as a dust storm descends on the small town. The object of her fury is her errant husband Ricardo (Simon Palomare) who calmly steps over her and hits the road with his new Australian lover Wendy (Helen Thomson). Taking all the family's money with him, Ricardo lives the high life and buys an expensive new car while Lola and her teenaged daughter Lucia (Alice Ansara) go hungry. Though Lola vows bloody revenge, it is Wendy's greasy cooking that eventually kills Ricardo. With him dead, Lola and Lucia plot their own separate strategies to get Ricardo's car -- the only thing of value that the guy owned. This film was screened at the 2001 Toronto Film Festival.
