Brazilian director Jose Joffily takes the helm for this bleak drama concerning the plight of illegal Brazilian immigrants struggling to survive in New York City. As shy Tonho (Roberto Bomtempo) attempts to realize his dreams of fame while facing the stark reality that he is being pursued by the Immigration Service, outgoing rapper Paco (Debora Falabella) ignores reality in favor of focusing entirely on her career. When Tonho is arrested and threatened with deportation, Paco must struggle to survive in an alien environment that grows increasingly threatening with the passing of each day.
