An unrequited love and the growth of a good friendship provide the basis of this unusual Japanese love story that begins as Hiroko attends the funeral of a friend. Standing alone and quiet in her grief, she thinks not of the deceased but of her fiancé Itsuki Fujii who was killed two years earlier while climbing a mountain. Following the funeral she goes to the home of her late friend; there she absently thumbs through an old high school year book and finds a picture of Itsuki. She writes down his boyhood address and later, Hiroko writes a love letter to Itsuki and sends it. A strange thing happens when she receives a reply. She looks at the name and return address and it is from Itsuki Fujii. But this Itsuki is a young woman who went to school with the deceased. She and Hiroko begin corresponding and as they get to know each other and deal with their mutual pain, flashbacks of their young lives are seen.
