Muscular American character actor Steve Darrell began showing up in bit roles around 1938. Darrell is best known for his characterization of Frank James in the 1946 Republic serial Adventures of Frank and Jesse James and his on-and-off appearance as Bat Masterson in Anthony Mann's Winchester 73 (1950). His screen output consisted mostly of westerns, with occasional exceptions like The Monolith Monsters (1957). Steve Darrell occasionally billed himself as J. Stevan Darrell.
